"It is our hope that New Mexicans who support a living wage for working families will stand by their champions.
Their recall is widely attributed to their minimum wage vote, and the entire state is watching to see what happens to those who stand up for working people in the public arena."
- Don Kurtz,  Las Crucens Against the Recall

Las Cruces City Hall

Just a week after City Councilors passed a citywide minimum wage hike, a group of business owners and conservative donors affiliated with the Tea Party and the Koch brothers' Americans for Prosperity launched a recall effort to remove three progressive councilors who voted for the minimum wage hike.

Citizens complained of misleading tactics and fraudulent petitions used to reach the recall goal; then, just before the clerk was set to declare the recall a failure, the group sued to force the election.

Progressive Champions Defense Fund

Court battles are expensive, especially for city councilors who earn less than $30,000 a year.
They stood for good policy, now we're standing up for them.

We won't let progressive leaders be bullied when they stand up for working people against big-money corporate interests.
